New car sales have increased by 47 per cent between January and July this year compared to the same period last year. According to the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) 74,111 new cars were sold in the first seven months of 2010, compared to just 57,000 from January to July in 2009.

The SIMI figures show that the Ford Focus is the best selling model so far this year Also, sales of diesel cars are up 8 per cent – these are normally cheaper to tax due to having lower CO2 emissions.

The Government scrappage scheme seems to have contributed to the boost in new car sales so far this year. Director General of the SIMI, Alan Nolan, estimates that 8,500 of these sales were due to the Government-backed scheme.

Under the scrappage scheme you get a €1,500 reduction on the vehicle registration tax (VRT) if you purchase a new low-emissions car when you trade in an applicable used car.
