A DXA scan is the name given to the type of x-ray used to diagnose Osteoporosis. It stands for Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry.
Osteoporosis is a decrease in bone strength, which places a person at high risk of a bone break of fracture. One in three women and one in five men are at risk of Osteoporosis in their lifetime. Those specifically at risk are those with family history, history of calcium or Vitamin D deficiencies and women 45+.
However, like many conditions, Osteoporosis can be prevented in the majority of cases if diagnosed at an early stage.
All scans at Euromedic Ireland centres are reported on by our RCSI accredited Consultant Radiologists. Reports and diagnosis are then issued to your GP or the medical referrer who will identify the appropriate treatment required for you. In accordance with the Radiological Protection Act 1991, a referral letter from a medical professional will be required for all scans at Euromedic Ireland.
